**Reasons to Purchase**
Friends who have read my previous article should already know that I once built my own H1 projector. However, the place where I can't get good sound is really frustrating. Since the projector has to be placed on the side of the bedside table, the sound comes from the side only. Especially in the evening, the sound on the projection side is too loud, while the sound on the other side (where my wife and adult family members are) is too quiet — it really affects the overall experience.
By the way, I want to complain again: this so-called Harman Kardon audio projector is just a label. It's not even close to being worth the price.
So I decided to add a sound system in front of me. I did a lot of research online before making a decision. My wife and adults were very careful and said to me, “If you want to buy it, the money has already called you.†From then on, I ordered the Sony SRS-ZR7 directly through JD.com. Although many products on JD have been canceled without reason within seven days, the return policy is still something I appreciate.
**Unpacking**
JD.com is always fast with deliveries. The packaging was minimal, and there were some signs of box compression.
After opening the box, I found the foam inside was damaged — that’s disappointing. There were still traces of the second-hand seller, but after checking the device, I found no signs of use or damage.
Included items: speaker, power adapter, power cable, and manual.
**Appearance Gallery**
The size of the speaker is about the same as a cigarette pack. I compared it with a friend’s homemade speaker and also used JBL Go and millet for reference.
The overall design is simple, square-shaped, with no fancy features. The sound is small, but the back panel has a full set of ports.
It has Dolby certification, DTS Digital Cinema System, Clear Audio+, and DSEE HX.
ZR7 has a 3.5mm audio jack, USB A, LAN, HDMI, USB B, and Bluetooth support.
The edges are smooth, and it has a Hi-Res Audio gold label.
The top has touch buttons for power, volume, and function selection. The black body is very sensitive to fingerprints and dust.
Function buttons allow switching between connection methods, but at night, it's hard to tell which button is which. If the buttons had backlighting, it would be much better.
**Connection Method**
I tried connecting via USB B, but after connecting to the computer, the audio device was recognized, but playing music caused lag and even crashed the software. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this.
As a long-time user of NetEase Cloud Music (despite its copyright issues), I usually listen to music and read comments. When I opened a membership, I got high-quality, lossless audio. Unfortunately, Bluetooth connection leads to a drop in sound quality, and I didn’t feel a big difference.
The only comfort is that this speaker supports local QPLAY. If you're a QQ Music user, it's convenient. But I'm reluctant to pay for a QQ Music membership because even the highest-tier member can't play lossless tracks. That's really annoying.
Additionally, ZR7 supports HDMI (ARC), but since my projector supports it, the wired connection is limited. I ended up giving up on that option.
The ZR7 app allows switching connections via your phone. Even when the speaker is off, it maintains network connectivity and can be turned on remotely — very convenient.
**About Sound Quality (Usage Scenario)**
When I removed the metal panel, I saw two full-range units on each side and two independent bass drivers in the middle. ZR7 uses a dual-chamber, dual-speaker design with a passive radiator for low-frequency enhancement.
I’m not a music expert, but I can subjectively say that when using a U盘 or QPLAY to play high-quality lossless music, the sound quality is noticeably better than some of my previous equipment, like the so-called Harman Kardon speaker or the 1999 yuan TV audio.
The speaker is placed in the TV cabinet, and the projector connects via Bluetooth (the background image is a wedding photo).
Back to the original purpose of buying this speaker: to improve the audio experience during movie watching. A wired connection is definitely better, but I only have Bluetooth available, which causes sound quality loss. This makes the experience worse, especially considering the distance and how the sound effects from the projector are affected.
Using Bluetooth to connect the projector to ZR7 and playing music, compared to connecting via QPLAY from my phone, even someone with average ears can hear a big difference.
Connecting the projector to ZR7 via Bluetooth to play games is also unsatisfactory. Game sounds and character voices mix together, and the clarity isn’t great.
**Summary**
The variety of connection options meets most users’ needs, but it doesn’t fit mine. Can’t it support AirPlay?
The audio playback is satisfactory when playing lossless files, but in most cases, I have to use Bluetooth, which doesn’t meet my expectations.
Maybe it could work well as a living room audio system, paired with a TV. Sony’s Music Center app supports multiple devices connected simultaneously, acting as a tandem speaker.
