For example, General Motors' first fully automated vehicle reportedly includes a $40,000 lidar sensor. While several companies are working on cheaper alternatives, experts argue that no single sensor currently meets both cost and performance requirements for highway use. Aeva claims its system provides better range, higher resolution, improved performance in bad weather, less interference from other lidar systems, and enhanced detection of reflective objects. As automakers prepare to roll out highly automated vehicles in the coming years, startups like Aeva are stepping up to challenge established suppliers.
