UN Selects AR/VR Charity Project Provides Up to $90,000 in Free Grants

On September 1, 2017, UNICEF's Innovation Fund began seeking the next wave of startups focused on creating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) solutions aimed at enhancing children's lives. These ventures may receive seed funding of up to $90,000, along with business mentorship and support—all without any equity requirements. Last year in February, UNICEF established a $9 million innovation fund designed to back startups in emerging markets. This initiative seeks to empower these businesses in developing open-source solutions tailored to improving the lives of the world's most vulnerable children. Since then, the fund has grown significantly, reaching over $11.2 million in contributions. Recently, UNICEF announced the initial group of supported startups, which includes 9Needs—a blockchain-focused company based in South Africa—as well as four others from Nicaragua, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Pakistan. Now, they've opened another application cycle, specifically targeting startups working on VR and AR technologies. According to UNICEF, VR and AR technologies hold immense potential for addressing real-world challenges. By offering immersive ways to access information, these innovations can revolutionize how we learn, understand intricate systems, and interact with one another. The organization aims to invest between $50,000 and $90,000 into each selected startup. Their goal is to assist these companies in building consumer-facing software that fosters new realities, ensuring broader accessibility to such platforms. Additionally, they hope to equip creators with superior tools for generating content and developing niche applications. UNICEF shows particular interest in startups concentrating on educational advancements, navigating complicated environments, and crafting innovative storytelling formats. Importantly, all financial backing from UNICEF comes without expectations of share returns. Successful applicants gain access to UNICEF’s innovative investment team, receiving expert advice on product and tech development. Furthermore, these startups benefit from commercial guidance meant to amplify the positive influence of their offerings on children worldwide. With each round of investments, UNICEF continues to push boundaries in leveraging cutting-edge tech for social good.
