On July 17, the official website of Foxconn in Taiwan announced some surprising news: Hisense had filed another lawsuit against itself in the U.S., this time accusing Hisense of infringing on Sharp's patents related to smart TVs. This lawsuit came just after Sharp had initiated legal proceedings against Hisense in Los Angeles, further escalating their ongoing battle.
Back in 2015, Sharp, struggling financially at the time, invited Hisense to help manage its operations in North America. However, things quickly went south as Sharp TVs started losing market share. By 2016, following Foxconn's acquisition of Sharp, the relationship soured. Foxconn began pressuring Hisense to relinquish control over the Sharp brand, ultimately leading to Sharp attempting to reclaim its brand identity from Hisense. According to reports from Taiwanese media, Foxconn's CEO, Dai Zheng Wu Xuan, mentioned that they were prepared to take "disruptive" actions to ensure Hisense stepped aside. The current patent infringement lawsuit is a continuation of these aggressive moves.
Experts have noted that Sharp has been filing and withdrawing lawsuits strategically in the U.S., regardless of the outcome, aiming to damage Hisense's brand reputation and force them into submission. Despite this, the initial arbitration case brought before the Singapore Arbitration Center in May did not support Sharp's claims, neither legally nor ethically. Consequently, Sharp has resorted to other tactics.
Global Technology reached out to Hisense's brand department for confirmation, and the news was verified. However, representatives from Hisense's brand team chose not to comment directly. Close associates of Hisense, though, shared that Chairman Zhou Sheng adheres to the principle of "never complain, but never fear." Hisense remains undeterred by such patent litigations and is committed to defending its rights through legitimate channels.
This ongoing dispute between Hisense and Sharp, often referred to as the "Haixia War," has sparked significant interest and debate online due to its implications for both Chinese and Taiwanese-Japanese corporate interests.
