In August of this year, the Sony A1 series 77-inch OLED TV, the KD-77A1, became the first model in the series to hit the Chinese market. Despite its steep price tag of 1,499,990 yuan, it quickly became one of the most sought-after OLED TVs of the year. However, in Europe, consumers didn't get their chance to see this model until the opening of IFA 2017 in Berlin, Germany, where the 77-inch version of the A1 was officially launched for the first time on the continent.
IFA 2017 was a major showcase for Sony's new product lineup, featuring three wireless noise-canceling stereo headphones, three Xperia series smartphones, and the latest addition to the RX family, the RX0, among other innovations. Yet, the star of the show at the Sony booth was undoubtedly the BRAVIA series of TVs. The exhibit prominently displayed TVs in sizes of 100 inches, 77 inches, and 65 inches, each showcasing the stunning visual capabilities of the brand.
The 77-inch version of the Sony A1 is equipped with an OLED panel boasting over 8 million self-illuminating pixels. It pairs this with Sony's exclusive X1 Ultimate 4K HDR image processing chip, which delivers unparalleled blacks, vibrant colors, and eliminates motion blur entirely. This combination allows the A1 series to precisely control a vast number of pixels, enhancing the capabilities of OLED technology and creating detailed 4K HDR images. In terms of sound, the A1 features Sony’s proprietary Acoustic Surface Audio technology, using the screen itself to vibrate and produce sound. This ensures a slim design while offering immersive audio experiences.
Sony's BRAVIA series televisions, unveiled at IFA, all support 4K HDR technology. HDR has become a buzzword in the TV industry, and Sony has been at the forefront of this trend since its inception. Sony’s strength in HDR is unmatched globally, thanks to its comprehensive ecosystem that spans capturing, producing, broadcasting, and displaying content.
Beyond the A1, Sony showcased other 4K HDR products like the BRAVIA X 9400E/X9300E LCD TVs, PlayStation4 Pro (PS4 Pro), and a UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc player. These were paired with the HT-ST5000 Echo Wall Sound Bar to provide an immersive audio and video experience with the latest Dolby Atmos surround sound technology.
Sony is not limiting HDR technology to just TVs. They’ve integrated it into their new Xperia XZ1 smartphones, which feature a 5.2-inch HDR full HD screen. At the booth, Sony also highlighted partnerships with companies like Amazon and Docomo to bring 4K HDR content to a wider audience.
This event underscored Sony's commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual and auditory entertainment. Whether through TVs or mobile devices, Sony continues to lead the way in delivering cutting-edge technology to its customers worldwide.
