Samsung and LG agree to resolve OLED patent disputes through dialogue

Samsung Display and LG Display agreed to resolve OLED panel patent disputes through dialogue to prevent the court from escalating the situation.

In recent months, both companies have announced that they will start litigation battles over OLED patented technology. The incident began in 2011 when Samsung Display suspected that its 11 employees had leaked to competitor LG Display the details of its OLED technology used in smartphones, tablets, TVs and other devices.

Since then, the two have attacked and defended each other. LG Display applied to the court in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2012 to prohibit the sale of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets in South Korea. Subsequently, in November 2012, Samsung urged the judge to rule that LG Display's 7 OLED patents were invalid in a patent lawsuit.

Patent war related:

Samsung wars at home to accuse LG of stealing its display patents

Samsung, a well-known home appliance giant, seems to be unable to bear the loneliness without a patent war. Recently, Korean media reported that the patent war between Samsung and LG started again. This time, Samsung filed a lawsuit against LG for violation of its 7 One PLS liquid crystal panel technology patent and claimed 2 billion won.

I remember that in September this year, LG Display, a subsidiary of LG, filed a lawsuit in South Korea claiming that the OLED display used by Samsung Galaxy violated LGD patents and demanded a claim of US $ 6.26 million. In November, Samsung filed a counterclaim against LG, arguing that LG had stolen Samsung ’s OLED technology, and several LG employees were charged with theft.

It is reported that after years of development, the LCD market is gradually saturated, and OLED is just entering the market promotion period, so the demand is large. This reason may be the main factor that caused the two Korean power giants to break out of the patent war.

LG v. Samsung patent infringement: demanding payment of USD 930,000 in compensation every day

According to the technology blog CNET, LG Display recently filed a lawsuit in the Korean court, accusing Samsung Electronics of infringing its own display patent, applying for a ban on the sale of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet in South Korea, and demanding the latter to compensate 1 billion won per day, or about $ 933,000 .

It is reported that the focus of the dispute between the two parties is related to OLED display technology. Through this technology, the display viewing experience can be improved very well. LG said that in view of Samsung's "continuation of patent infringement," it will seek the latter to compensate 1 billion won per day, or about 933,000 US dollars.

Samsung and LG have long initiated legal proceedings for OLED display patent issues. In September this year, LG took the lead in bringing a lawsuit against Samsung, claiming that the latter infringed its own seven patents on OLED technology. These patents are used in the design and drive circuits of OLED screens. At that time, LG asked Samsung to compensate for certain losses, and asked the court to permanently ban the sale of the latter five products including Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Note. In November, Samsung countersued LG, saying that the latter's patented OLED technology "lacked innovation" and had become invalid.

However, the battle between the two parties is not limited to legal proceedings, but also extends to commercial espionage. Earlier this year, 11 Samsung employees and former employees were arrested for allegedly stealing the company ’s AMOLED technology and leaking it to LG. In addition, six LG employees were also involved.

As the two major display manufacturers in South Korea, Samsung and LG are fighting fiercely, grabbing the market share of the display, especially the OLED panels widely used in smartphones, tablets and TV equipment.
