With today's growing consumer demand for various HD video-on-demand, cable operators need a solution that is both cost-effective and based on mature standards in order to be able to deploy high-value-added high-definition two-way set-top boxes. Broadcom's new solution uses a dual-chip design that combines BCM3308 and BCM7584 to successfully meet this demand. BCM3308 is a single-chip cable modem based on Broadcom's industry-leading DOCSIS 2.0 product line. As of now, Broadcom's DOCSIS 2.0 SoC shipments have exceeded 150 million. BCM7584 is the first low-cost high-definition digital cable set-top box SoC that integrates full-band capture technology and IP video service technology. Broadcom ’s groundbreaking full-band capture technology allows four modems on the BCM7584 to simultaneously access broadcast video and tune DOCSIS, with full-band flexibility and a bandwidth up to 1 GHz. The full-band capture technology also makes remote network diagnosis and monitoring possible, which can greatly reduce the need for on-site customer service and save a lot of operating expenses for cable operators.

In addition to full-band capture technology, Broadcom ’s new set-top box product is also equipped with a 3D graphics processing unit to support an advanced user interface using HTML5; a spectrum analyzer with advanced diagnostic functions; and Broadcom, which can switch channels almost instantly Innovative solution FastRTV®. Compared with Broadcom's previous generation of single-chip products, the performance of the new generation of high-definition DOCSIS 2.0 set-top box solutions with 2000 DMIPS processing speed has doubled. In order to further promote the rapid deployment of the new high-definition DOCSIS 2.0 set-top box solution, Broadcom also provides a complete single-board reference design equipped with certified DOCSIS 2.0 software and Nexus-Trellis set-top box software. Broadcom ’s Nexus-Trellis set-top box software can support many popular middleware solutions, including the new open source based reference development kit (RDK), which can support rapid migration and software development from the BCM7019-based design platform . Nexus-Trellis software has a large open application library that can support popular extension software such as DLNA, Miracast, OpenGL, DirectFB and Gstreamer.
