Freescale and CPqD partner to deploy wireless infrastructure technology across Brazil

Freescale and Brazil's leading research centers have joined hands to deploy Brazil's wireless infrastructure on a large scale. Freescale's QorIQ Qonverge on-chip base station technology will meet Brazil's need to host the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2014 Football World Cup, and play a key role in building a national LTE network.

Freescale Semiconductor has partnered with CPqD, Brazil ’s largest telecommunications research and development center, to deploy advanced wireless infrastructure technologies throughout Brazil to welcome the 2016 Olympic Games and other major events. CPqD will work with Freescale to develop a 450 MHz LTE solution based on Freescale's QorIQ Qonverge on-chip base station processor for long-distance base stations across Brazil.

As the host country of the 2013 Confederations Cup, the 2014 Football World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil spares no expense to upgrade and expand the wireless infrastructure system. One of the investments is that CPqD has established the first laboratory in Latin America to test and measure LTE technology in different frequency bands at 2.6 GHz, 700 MHz and 450 MHz.

Freescale Semiconductor is a leader in the field of network communication processing and plays an important role in the construction of wireless infrastructure in Brazil. The company provides QorIQ Qonverge BSC9132 on-chip base stations as core processors to build a 450 MHz LTE small base station network, a single base station signal Coverage can be up to 30 kilometers. The solution also includes Freescale RF power products and low noise amplifiers.

"Hosting three global events in less than 36 months is an arduous task, but it also creates unprecedented investment opportunities for world-class communications infrastructure and has a profound impact on Brazil's future development," Fabrício, manager of the CPqD wireless communications department Lira Figueiredo said, "Freescale is a global leader in base station processing. Its QorIQ Qonverge on-chip base station technology can help us calmly meet the technical challenges of building a nationwide wireless infrastructure for large-scale events."

QorIQ Qonverge technology is based on a unified architecture that integrates communication processing, digital signals, and wireless acceleration technologies on a single chip, providing multiple optimized configurations for next-generation wireless devices. Advanced process technology and excellent integration make the various functions previously completed by FPGA, ASIC, DSP and processor chips in one device. This integration reduces the number of parts and greatly saves the power consumption, cost and volume of the base station. The scale of the network applicable to the unified architecture is large, ranging from microcell to macrocell, optimizing R & D investment and software reuse.

Stephen Turnbull, wireless marketing manager for Freescale ’s Digital Network Division, said, “Freescale is very honored to work with CPqD to complete this historic initiative. QorIQ Qonverge technology will play a pivotal role in enhancing and expanding truly global network capabilities. "

The QorIQ Qonverge BSC9132 system-on-chip combines two e500 cores based on Power Architecture technology, two StarCore SC3850 cores, and a MAPLE-B2P baseband acceleration engine. As a highly programmable device, the processor supports 20 MHz single-segment LTE-FDD / TDD and HSPA +, supporting uplink and downlink transmission rates of 150 Mbps downlink and 75 Mbps uplink and 42 Mbps downlink and 11.5 Mbps uplink, respectively. The processor supports various types of air interfaces, including LTE (FDD / TDD), WCDMA (HSPA + and UMTS), WiMAX and CDMA. The introduction of seamless RFIC communication and antenna interfaces eliminates the need for additional chips, thereby saving board space and cost.
