A new, cost-effective printed sensor has been developed by scientists to monitor the condition of car tires in real time. This innovative technology alerts drivers when tire treads become thin and require replacement, enhancing vehicle safety, improving performance, and reducing fuel consumption.
Researchers at Duke University in the United States have created this advanced sensor using metal carbon nanotubes. These tiny structures, with a diameter of just one billionth of a meter, can track changes in tread depth with an impressive 99% accuracy. The sensor works by placing two small conductive electrodes close together, generating an electric field that measures the tire's condition.
According to Franklin, an associate professor at Duke, current automotive sensors often fail to collect data from the only part of the vehicle that actually touches the road — the tires. This new technique leverages the interaction between electric fields and conductive materials, making it highly effective for monitoring tire health.
The sensor grid can be connected to various parts of the tire, allowing it to detect uneven wear and other issues. While multiple materials and methods can be used to create these sensors, researchers are focusing on optimizing their size, structure, and material properties to enhance performance.
After testing different options, they found that printing a metal carbon nanotube electrode onto a flexible polyimide film produced the best results. Not only does this setup perform well, but the material is also durable enough to withstand the harsh conditions inside a tire.
These sensors can be printed on a wide range of surfaces using aerosol jet technology, even inside the tire itself. Although direct printing may not be the most efficient method yet, once mass-produced, the cost of these sensors is expected to be significantly lower than traditional alternatives.
Duke University is also exploring the use of similar printed sensors for other automotive applications, such as monitoring brake pad thickness or tire pressure. This breakthrough could revolutionize how vehicles are maintained and monitored, offering a smarter and safer driving experience.
