Toyota, Mazda, and Denso, a major Japanese auto parts manufacturer, have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop electric vehicle (EV) technologies. On the 28th, the three companies signed an agreement to establish a new company aimed at accelerating research and development in EV-related technologies. This collaboration is expected to strengthen their positions in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
According to a joint statement released on the same day, Toyota will contribute 90% of the initial capital, while Mazda and Denso will each contribute 5%. The new company will be based in Nagoya, close to Toyota’s headquarters, and will focus on developing fundamental technologies for electric vehicles across various models and levels. Most of its full-time engineers will come from the three parent companies through secondment.
With global pressure increasing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many countries are now mandating that a certain percentage of vehicles sold must be electric. This trend has pushed automakers to rethink their long-term strategies.
Toyota has traditionally focused on hybrid and fuel cell vehicles as part of its eco-friendly strategy. However, in November 2016, the company announced plans to build a mass production system for pure electric vehicles by 2020.
