As the automotive industry moves toward a future dominated by electric vehicles, major Chinese automakers are beginning to unveil their timelines for transitioning into the electrified era. Recently, international media reported that Audi is planning to produce electric vehicles in its key manufacturing facilities around the world, aiming to expand the global electric vehicle market through economies of scale.
Audi's global strategy includes launching electric vehicles at factories in Mexico and Hungary. Peter Mertens, Audi’s Research Director, stated that the company aims to introduce over 20 electric models by 2025, including more than a dozen all-electric vehicles. For the Chinese market, Audi plans to bring at least three pure electric models, such as the e-tronquattro SUV, an undisclosed electric car, and a compact electric model. In addition, Audi will begin producing the e-tron Sportback in 2019, with plans to launch a pure electric or plug-in hybrid version of the Q3 soon.
This move aligns with China’s new “Dual-Integration†policy, which requires automakers to meet specific new energy vehicle credit targets starting in 2019. The policy is expected to push automakers to accelerate their transition to electric vehicles. As one of the most established luxury brands in China, Audi has been closely monitoring these developments and is increasing its investment in new energy products for the local market.
Currently, Audi offers several e-tron models, including the e-tron versions of the A3 sportback, A6L, and Q7. The A6L e-tron was the first domestically produced Audi new energy model, debuting at the Chengdu Auto Show. Meanwhile, the Q7 e-tron has been listed in the national tax-exempt new energy vehicle catalog, making it one of the few luxury plug-in hybrids available in China.
Looking ahead, Audi plans to further expand its electric vehicle lineup. By 2020, the company will begin producing compact electric vehicles based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. Starting in 2021, Audi will also launch electric models built on a new high-end platform developed in partnership with Porsche. These models are expected to be introduced in China in the coming years.
At this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled the A8 e-tron, featuring wireless charging technology. This model combines a 3.0T turbocharged engine with an 8AT transmission and an integrated motor for hybrid performance. The system uses a 48V generator to charge a lithium-ion battery pack, providing up to 50 km of electric range. In addition to traditional plug-in charging, the A8 e-tron also supports wireless charging, where the vehicle automatically aligns with a charging pad for seamless power transfer.
While wireless charging is still in early stages, it represents a potential future trend in the evolving new energy vehicle landscape. As infrastructure develops, consumers may see more intelligent, efficient, and convenient charging solutions.
Beyond e-tron models, Audi has also explored alternative drive systems, such as the g-tron series, which runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). These models emit at least 80% less CO₂ compared to similar gasoline vehicles. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi launched two g-tron models—the A4 Avant g-tron and A5 Sportback g-tron—offering impressive fuel efficiency and performance.
