Freescale expands embedded motor control family to provide cost-effective 8-bit MCU

By introducing S08MP16, Freescale Semiconductor is expanding its embedded motor control series. This entry-level 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) series provides a safe, accurate, and cost-optimized solution for brushless DC (BLDC) motor control applications from industrial drives to automotive electronic fuel pumps.

BLDC motors are becoming increasingly popular in consumer electronics, industrial and automotive electronics because they provide efficiency and reliability advantages over traditional brushed DC and electromagnetic induction motors. This S08MP16 microcontroller is optimized to meet the needs of this fast-growing motor segment, and can also support other motor types, including AC electromagnetic induction motors.

Safe and reliable control

By achieving fast and precise motor shutdown, a variety of high-speed analog comparators and powerful 8-channel FlexTImer pulse width modulation (PWM) modules provide protection against excessive voltage. For household appliances that need to comply with IEC60730 safety standards, a watchdog / COP with a separate clock and a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) engine can provide clock failure protection and memory content confirmation.

Rich analog integration

Designers using S08MP16 benefit from a wide range of on-chip analog peripherals, minimizing the need for external components and helping to reduce the overall system cost. Peripherals include programmable gain amplifiers (PGA), various analog comparators, and a 13-channel, 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with pulse-width modulation hardware trigger. PGA enables precise motor control and provides high resolution ADC readings on a wide range of motor loads and speeds. Compared with the software implementation, FlexTImer's hardware dead time insertion capability further improves the accuracy of the system and reduces the load on the central processor.

Development resources and expertise

Freescale provides dedicated application support, including hardware reference designs, application notes and software algorithms, and libraries covering all motor control topologies. In addition, Freescale's regional motor control design center provides application support from concept to delivery.

In order to help shorten the time to market, a low-cost demo board (DEMO9S08MP16) is provided for immediate device evaluation; the board also provides a complimentary version of CodeWarrior IDE with a capacity of up to 32 KB and Processor Expert quick application tool. Freescale also provides accessory analog devices for motor control system solutions, including MC33937 3-phase FET pre-drivers and MC33880 / 87 and MC33926 / 32 H-bridges.
