South Korea to create new 3D holographic image technology, imaging quality increased 2600 times


A Korean research institute successfully developed a new 3D hologram technology and used it to produce a hologram with a length, width and height of 50px and a viewing angle of 35°.

There is also a naked-eye 3D holography technique in which the direction of light and the anamorphic mirror (DM) are controlled by a wavefront modulator to produce a 3D holographic image that can be viewed without wearing glasses. However, the problem is that even the highest resolution display currently does not have enough pixels to generate 3D images. This means that this technique can only create a 1cm (0.4 inch) size hologram with a viewing angle of only 3°.
This situation will not last long. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) used DM and an external diffuser to scatter light, and successfully improved the quality of 3D holograms. This is because scattered light allows a wider viewing angle and a larger projected image. However, the use of scattering can lead to an unpleasant body speckle field effect. KAIST cleverly uses wavefront-beam shaping technology to solve the speckle problem.
KAIST's technology produces larger 3D holograms: 2 cm (0.8 in) in length, width and height, and a 35° viewing angle. Compared with any existing holographic technology, the image quality has increased by nearly 2,600 times. If their technology can continue to enlarge, it will undoubtedly set off a new wave of holographic imaging and advanced AR/VR technology.
