[PConline News] Since June 2013, China has dominated the TOP500 supercomputing rankings with its homegrown technology. The Tianhe-2 supercomputer secured six consecutive titles, while the Shenzhi Taihu Light, which made history in June 2016, became the first to break the 10 petaflop barrier. It not only surpassed the Tianhe-2 but also claimed the top spot three times in a row. In the latest TOP500 list, the Shenzhi Taihu Light once again took first place, marking its fourth victory and China's tenth consecutive win in the ranking. The Tianhe-2, which had previously won six straight titles, now holds second place.
The recent update highlights a significant shift between China and the U.S. In the previous ranking, the U.S. had 169 supercomputers, while China had 160. This time, China increased its count to 202, surpassing the U.S., which dropped to 143. Japan follows with 35, Germany with 20, France with 18, and the UK with 15. These numbers are far behind the U.S. and China. Moreover, China’s supercomputers account for 35.4% of the total floating-point performance across the TOP500 list, compared to 29.6% for the U.S.
This year’s champion, the Shenzhi Taihu Light, is located at the Wuxi Supercomputer Center. It boasts a theoretical floating-point performance of 12.5 petaflops and a Linpack performance of 9.3 petaflops (93 PFLOPS), with a power consumption of 17.8 megawatts. The system uses the Shenwei SW26010 processor, a 260-core chip developed by Jiangnan. The second-place system, Tianhe-2, still holds strong with a Linpack performance of 3.39 petaflops and similar power consumption of 17.8 megawatts. It runs on Intel Xeon E5 processors and Xeon Phi accelerator cards.
The third-ranked system, the U.S.’s Titan, has dropped to fifth, with the Swiss Piz Daint taking third place. Based on Cray’s XC50 architecture, it uses NVIDIA Tesla P100 accelerators and delivers 19.6 PFLOPS. The Japanese Fugaku supercomputer, a new entrant, ranks fourth with 19.1 PFLOPS and an impressive energy efficiency of just 1.35 megawatts, using Intel Xeon and PEZY-SC2 accelerators.
