Mixed-Signal SoC sets new standards for ultra-low-power, always-on voice triggering

21ic News ON Semiconductor has introduced the new "always listening" voice-triggered system-on-chip (SoC) solution BelaSigna R281, designed for popular consumer electronics devices such as smartphones, tablets and wearables. The BelaSigna R281 uses an audio matching mode algorithm developed by ON Semiconductor to detect a single triggered phrase that is trained by the user. This phrase can be any sound series and is not necessarily related to the phonetic language. When BelaSigna R281 recognizes this trigger phrase, it connects the output wake-up signal to the host controller without the user having to touch the device to wake it up before use.
Based on the company's well-known ultra-low power technology for advanced hearing aid solutions, the BelaSigna R281 has little impact on standby battery life. Unlike some standalone solutions that are only compatible with digital microphones, the BelaSigna R281's mixed-signal architecture can simulate digital microphone signal operation. The device offers a configurable, tuned microphone for easy integration. Other key features of the BelaSigna R281 include an I 2 C interface for configuration and control, a configurable GPIO wake-up signal, and an internal oscillator.
The BelaSigna R281 is available in a 5 mm x 5 mm QFN32 package and will soon be available in an ultra-miniature package of 2.42 mm x 2.74 mm WLCSP. Both packages can be designed on single-sided PCBs, with 4 mil routing and minimizing the number of external components, providing the simplest solution for voice triggering that is always on and listening.
