Display: Large-size OLEDs Debut 4K Leading HD

Display: Large size OLED appearance 4K leads HD At CES 2012, it was a gathering of heroes from all walks of life. Vendors exhibited the latest and most dazzling products in order to attract the attention of the audience. Among them, smart home appliances, 4K Ultra HD/OLED TVs, Ultrabooks, and quad-core mobile devices have become the highlights of the 2012 CES.

As in previous years, display technology products represented by flat-panel TVs have occupied a large amount of display space at CES. A large number of 3D flat-panel TVs, large-size OLED displays and 4K ultra-high-definition video products competed in various exhibition booths and focused on presenting the hot technology of this year's CES new-generation flat panel display.

Large-size OLED emerges

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) features self-luminescence, does not require backlight source, compared with the current market's popular LCD / LED display, OLED display color more vivid, faster response, and its light weight, thin thickness The features are considered one of the most promising products of the 21st century.

Although OLEDs became a hot topic at CES in 2009, the size of OLEDs at that time was under 15 inches, and its high price made many people discouraged. This year's OLED situation has changed dramatically. Both LG and Samsung have exhibited 55-inch OLED HDTVs.

LG Display's 55-inch OLED TV panel features ultra-high image quality, a high contrast ratio of over 100,000:1, a wider color gamut, no afterimages, and no special light sources. At the same time using a minimalist structure thinner than a 5 mm pen, lighter than the LCD panel. In addition, LG Display also adopted white OLED (WOLED) technology with an oxide backplane, which makes OLED technology more cost-effective in the application of large-size panels. At the same time, Samsung's new 55-inch Super OLED TV also appeared in CES, and this TV supports full HD and 3D.

Although the two products of LG and Samsung appear to be close to being productized, OLED technology has always faced the problems of large-size manufacturing difficulties and short product life. Sony's Crystal LED Display products solved this problem. Crystal LED Display, also known as the inorganic version of OLED, is Sony's next-generation self-luminous display technology. Compared with OLEDs, the display characteristics of the two are basically the same, but the reliability of the Crystal LED Display is higher, the display life is longer, and as the display size increases, the manufacturing cost is also more economical. Due to its self-luminous properties, Crystal LED Display's darker picture is deeper than LCD TVs, and its screen brightness is higher than that of plasma, enabling excellent display even in bright ambient light. At the same time, because each pixel is composed of RGB tri-color LEDs, the individual control makes it have a wide color gamut, and currently reaches 100% NTSC color gamut (only about 72% of ordinary LCD TVs). When viewing a 3D presentation, Crystal LED Display can achieve a more natural and beautiful three-dimensional picture due to its high brightness and fast refresh rate, and the advantages are even more obvious.

Based on light-emitting diode technology, whether it is OLED, or its new rival Crystal LED Display, the resulting 3D picture is superior to the current 3D TV in brightness, contrast and dynamic resolution.

4K set a new benchmark for high-definition

Mentioned the resolution of the display, perhaps the consumer still stays at the stage that upgrades from 720P standard definition to 1080P high definition. However, exhibitors at this year's CES have announced to us that the 1080P era is coming to an end, and 4K Ultra HD will set a new benchmark for resolution. 4K is an image with a resolution of 4096×2160 (the standard is also slightly 3840×2160), which is 3 times higher than the current full HD, that is, 4 full-HD pictures can be placed in a 4K picture.

LG Display's 84-inch ultra-high-definition (UD) display has the world's highest resolution of 3480×2160, and its ultra high-definition picture quality is 4 times higher than full-HD resolution. In addition to the 84-inch display, LG Display also applies UD technology to other large-screen panels, such as 60-inch and 72-inch displays.

Previously, Sony had demonstrated its 4K display to the media. At this year's CES, Sony also applied the technology to the projection field and exhibited the most advanced 4K+3D home projectors with a standard resolution of 4096×2160 and an ultra-high contrast ratio of 1 million:1.

In addition, Toshiba, Sharp and Hisense also exhibited their large-size 4K LCD screens. Among them, Sharp also exhibited the world’s first 8K high-resolution LCD with a screen size of 100 inches, with an optimal resolution of 7680×4620, and a screen size of 85 inches, which again created a leading position in the industry.

In addition to its ability to display on the display, 4K has also been in the professional end, shooting end, and signal source. Manufacturers are also full of confidence in the overall upgrade of 4K. There is no doubt that 4K will not only become a hot topic at this year's CES, but will also become a focus of next-generation display technology in the coming years.

Technical Solution Shows World's Largest 55-inch OLED

LG has released the "world's largest" 55-inch OLED TV previously publicized, but the specific launch date and price are still undecided. The new product displayed at this CES weighs 7.5kg and is only 4mm thick. It uses a polarized 3D display mode with passive glasses. According to LG officials, the RGB+W mode adopted by this product is the color filter method. Compared with ordinary OLED TVs, it can greatly reduce the manufacturing cost and achieve a similar display effect.

Samsung also introduced a 55-inch “Super OLED” TV. The difference is that Samsung's product uses a traditional RGB self-illumination display and does not use color filters. Samsung said that this product will be listed during the year, the price has not been determined. The product is also equipped with a dual-core ARM architecture processor that can perform a variety of functions.

A new generation of display self-luminous

Sony has developed a self-luminous display "Crystal LED Display", which is planned for use in televisions. The prototype of the new product is 55 inches in size with 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display element of the new product adopts RGB three-color LED, which can be described as a true “LED display”. The number of display pixels for each color is 2,070,600, and the RGB pixel arrangement adopts the usual strip arrangement. Sony said that as an LED display, achieving 55-inch full HD is "the first time in the industry."

The display performance of this new product is even better than the LCD panel: the brightness is about 400cd/m2, the contrast in the dark environment is above the measurement limit, the color performance range is more than 100% according to the NTSC specification, and the viewing angle is about 180 degrees. . Compared with the LCD panel of the same size that Sony LCD TV "BRAVIA" is equipped with, the contrast of the new product is about 3.5 times that of the latter in a bright environment, the color performance range is about 1.4 times, and the response time is about 10 times faster.

20.4 inch panel 4K×2K pixels

Panasonic has developed an in-plane-switching (IPS) 20.4 inch LCD panel with 4K×2K (3840×2160) pixels. The pixel accuracy reaches 216ppi, which is the highest level in 4K×2K pixel display. Before the current CES, Matsushita announced the successful development through a press conference.

Although a liquid crystal panel called “IPSα panel” was developed this time, a high-definition panel of 4K×2K pixels was realized by combining an autonomous technology that improves the aperture ratio of liquid crystal pixels with a novel pixel structure. The technique of improving the aperture ratio mainly contributes to improving the fineness of pixels, and the new type of pixel structure mainly contributes to improving the transmittance.

This LCD panel is twice as transparent as the same-size full HD panel (1920×1080 pixel product). With this, it is possible to efficiently use the light of a liquid crystal panel backlight, so that the thickness of the liquid crystal panel can be reduced to 3.5 mm, the thickness can be reduced, and the same power consumption as a full HD panel of the same size can be displayed. 4K×2K high-definition image.

The LCD panel developed this time has a brightness of 450 cd/m2 and a color rendering of up to 70%. Panasonic said that it has adopted a self-developed liquid crystal self-aligning technology that can improve the diagonal viewing angle characteristics of the panel, and therefore can appreciate images with high color rendering requirements from a wide viewing angle.
