As a leading name in China's OLED industry, BOE has made significant progress by announcing that its 6th-generation flexible AMOLED production line in Chengdu is now in mass production ahead of schedule. This facility is not only China’s first fully flexible AMOLED line but also the second globally to use 6th-generation technology. The production line will support a wide range of applications, including smart devices, mobile terminals, wearables, and smart TVs. Recently, BOE has been working closely with China Mobile, which is expected to enter the smart TV market.
A recent document labeled as a "smart TV" authentication caught attention, revealing it to be a product from China Mobile Communications Group Terminal Co., Ltd. This suggests that China Mobile is stepping into the smart TV sector. Based on previous 3C certification timelines, this smart TV, developed in collaboration with BOE, is likely to launch before year-end. As the largest display panel manufacturer in China, BOE brings advanced R&D capabilities and full-system solutions, while China Mobile offers strong service, channel, and content advantages.
Beyond mobile screens, BOE is expanding into a broader ecosystem. With the release of the iPhone X, more manufacturers are shifting from traditional LCDs to OLED panels. According to IHS Market, 36% of smartphones will feature flexible OLED screens this year, rising to 53% by 2020, with an estimated market value of $71.7 billion. Domestic brands like Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo already ship over a million units monthly, but supply still lags behind demand. This has prompted BOE to expand its industrial layout.
Recently, BOE Chairman Wang Dongsheng emphasized the company’s vision as an IoT provider, offering intelligent port products and professional services for information interaction and health. Under this strategy, BOE aims to break through in four core areas: display, sensing, AI, and big data. It will also deepen new markets and enhance competitiveness in smart ports and professional services. The partnership with China Mobile allows smart TVs to leverage China Mobile’s vast user base and expand into other sectors.
Looking at China Mobile, the decision to launch smart TVs makes sense. In the era of rapid internet development, traditional home entertainment systems are no longer sufficient. Smart TVs have become the next big trend after PCs and smartphones, serving as the central hub for living room experiences. Consumer data shows that younger generations, particularly those aged 30-39 (51.14%) and 20-29 (25.63%), are increasingly adopting smart TVs. As these users grow up, they will shape the future of the market.
China Mobile recognizes this potential and is capitalizing on it by combining hardware and software for a seamless user experience. While some netizens question whether this move is driven by future charges or subscription models, the collaboration between BOE and China Mobile signals a strategic effort to capture a growing market. What do you think about this move? Is it a smart business decision or just another tech trend?
