At 8 a.m. on January 8th in Las Vegas, the LG CES press conference kicked off, marking the first major event of the day. The conference highlighted LG’s vision to become a people-centric AI company, with the theme "Innovation for a Better Life." As part of this strategy, LG introduced its new brand, ThinQ, which aims to bring smart, connected home appliances into everyday life.
During the presentation, LG showcased how ThinQ technology is already capable of identifying and communicating with all of its 2018 home appliances. For example, in a kitchen demonstration, the ThinQ refrigerator could interact with the EasyClean oven, guiding users through cooking steps via recipe apps. Then, the oven would notify the QuadWash dishwasher about the type of food being prepared, allowing it to select the most efficient washing cycle.
LG's ThinQ ecosystem integrates both its own AI platform, DeepThinQ, and technologies from external partners. This collaboration enables deep learning and seamless communication between devices, making the user experience more intuitive and efficient.
In 2018, LG continued to expand its presence in the OLED TV market. Building on the success of the 2017 W8 series, the company launched four new OLED TV models: G8, E8, C8, and B8. These TVs come with advanced AI features, such as voice-controlled navigation, news reading, map viewing, photo browsing, and even image recognition. While these capabilities are well-established in China, LG is now bringing them to a global audience.
Most of the AI features on these OLED TVs are developed in partnership with Google. However, LG also plans to introduce additional local partners like Baidu and iFlytek for the Chinese market, enhancing the overall user experience.
The 2018 OLED lineup features the new Alpha9 processor, which significantly improves noise reduction, image clarity, and motion handling. All models except the B8 support three major HDR formats, plus Technicolor HDR. They also support Dolby Surround and can handle high frame rates up to 120fps, offering smoother visuals—especially beneficial for sports content.
Alongside the OLED TVs, LG also unveiled three new LCD TV series: SK95, SK85, and SK80. These models feature dynamic backlight partition control, which allows each frame to be displayed with enhanced detail and contrast, delivering a more immersive viewing experience.
While 8K OLED TVs were a hot topic in previous years, they weren’t shown at this year’s press conference. LG is expected to unveil an 8K OLED panel at the main CES show later this week.
With the release of these new products, LG is signaling that 2018 will bring more affordable OLED options to consumers around the world.
