It supports devices with as little as 256MB of memory, making it ideal for a wide range of smart hardware. The system also integrates support for mainstream machine learning frameworks and uses an advanced JavaScript engine, boosting application speed by 35% and reducing memory usage by 20%.
To further aid developers, Alibaba introduced AliOS Studio, an integrated development tool that simplifies app creation. Xie Yan, General Manager of the AliOS Core Operating System Business Unit, emphasized that the code for AliOS Lite will be open-sourced on January 20. In the future, joint partners will launch an open-source reference hardware platform to accelerate smart hardware development. For example, traditional camera manufacturers can build smart cameras using AliOS Lite, leveraging Alibaba’s machine intelligence APIs and support for popular machine learning frameworks to enable advanced image processing capabilities like motion tracking and object recognition.
Additionally, Xie revealed that major chipmakers such as Intel, NXP, MediaTek, and Spreadtrum are planning to support AliOS Lite, helping to build a stronger ecosystem for lightweight smart hardware.
Hu Xiaoming, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of AliOS, expressed his vision: “The operating system should not just belong to Alibaba. I hope to open up AliOS so that it becomes an operating system used across all industries.†He added that Alibaba will focus on foundational R&D and foster collaboration with various sectors to drive intelligent innovation.
Since the official launch of AliOS Things on October 20, 21 chips from 17 domestic and international manufacturers—including STMicroelectronics, Espressif, and Beken—have been successfully ported or are in the process of being adapted to AliOS Things within just eight weeks.
