Alibaba announces open source AliOS Lite for IoT

In recent years, Alibaba has taken a leading role in the global open source movement. Recently, the company announced that it will open-source AliOS Lite on January 20 next year. This initiative is supported by 17 chip manufacturers, including industry giants like Intel, STMicroelectronics, and NXP, highlighting the growing interest in this lightweight IoT operating system. Since its brand repositioning in September this year, AliOS has been actively expanding its open source efforts. AliOS Things, designed for IoT applications, has now taken another step forward with the announcement of AliOS Lite's open sourcing. This move aims to support a wide range of smart devices, especially those with limited processing power and memory. AliOS Lite is a lightweight operating system tailored for the IoT domain. It supports multiple tasks, intelligent features such as voice interaction and visual computing, and is ideal for devices with low CPU performance and minimal memory requirements—starting at 256MB. This makes it suitable for smart speakers, wearables, cameras, and more. The system also supports intelligent scene development and popular machine learning frameworks. Powered by an advanced JavaScript engine, it boosts application speed by 35% and reduces memory usage by 20%. To further assist developers, Alibaba has released AliOS Studio, an integrated development tool that simplifies app creation. Xie Yan, General Manager of the AliOS Core Operating System Business Unit, stated that the code for AliOS Lite will be open-sourced on January 20. In the future, joint partners will release open-source reference hardware platforms to help developers build smart hardware faster. For example, traditional camera manufacturers can create smart cameras using AliOS Lite, integrating Alibaba’s machine intelligence APIs and support for mainstream learning frameworks. This enables cameras to perform advanced image processing tasks, such as motion tracking and object recognition. Additionally, Xie revealed that major chipmakers like Intel, NXP, MediaTek, and Spreadtrum are planning to support AliOS Lite, working together with lightweight smart hardware companies to provide essential infrastructure. Hu Xiaoming, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of AliOS, emphasized that the operating system should not belong solely to Alibaba. He envisions AliOS becoming an ecosystem that serves all industries. Looking ahead, Alibaba will focus on foundational research and foster collaboration across sectors to drive intelligent innovation. Since the official launch of AliOS Things on October 20, 21 chips from 17 domestic and international manufacturers—including STMicroelectronics, Espressif, and Beken—have been successfully ported or are in the process of being adapted to AliOS Things within just eight weeks. Over the past decade, Alibaba has consistently led in open source contributions, having launched over 150 projects since 2011, covering middleware, development frameworks, databases, and various tools. As part of this ongoing commitment, AliOS will continue to promote open source initiatives in the future.
