With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, its role in the field of cybersecurity has become increasingly significant. Facebook recently announced that 99% of extreme content is detected before it even reaches users, thanks to AI-driven systems. This technology not only enhances automation but also helps the platform combat terrorism more effectively.
On November 29th, Facebook emphasized that artificial intelligence is now a critical tool in safeguarding social networks from terrorist activities. The company highlighted how AI is being used to identify and remove harmful content, especially related to extremist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy management, and Brian Fishman, head of anti-terrorism policy, stated that their AI systems are already capable of detecting 99% of extremist content before any user reports it. This proactive approach allows the company to act swiftly and prevent the spread of dangerous material.
However, the team acknowledged that the system isn't flawless. They noted that different terrorist organizations use varying languages, symbols, and communication styles, making it challenging for a single AI model to adapt to all threats. As a result, Facebook is focusing its efforts on the most dangerous groups, such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, while working to expand its tools to cover other regional terrorist organizations in the future.
Despite these efforts, Facebook continues to face pressure from governments around the world. Critics argue that the platform inadvertently aids in the spread of terrorist propaganda and recruitment. British Prime Minister Theresa May has been particularly vocal, calling for stricter regulations on social media companies and urging international cooperation to address the issue.
In response, Facebook has partnered with major tech companies like Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube to create a global Internet Safety Forum. This initiative aims to develop better strategies for combating online extremism and promoting safer digital spaces for users worldwide.
