Seiko Instruments pushes LED lighting temperature sensor IC

January 17th Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) announced on January 17 the S-5855A series of pulse width modulation (PWM) output temperature sensor ICs for LED lighting design. When the temperature exceeds a certain value, SII's S-5855A begins to reduce the duty ratio of the PWM signal output. This change in load ratio allows the LED lighting circuit to avoid temperatures that exceed design limits and improve safety and efficiency while reducing overall design costs.

Recently, the LED lighting and backlight display market has experienced rapid growth. Although LED lighting has a strong performance advantage over incandescent lamps, it is necessary to give design considerations to LED thermal management to avoid shortening the service life. In general, take this implementation method:

(1) Perform heat dissipation design to improve heat dissipation of the casing;

(2) reducing the intensity of illumination at high temperatures;

(3) Stop working when the temperature rise exceeds the heat dissipation design value (turn off the light).

SII's S-5855A is optimized for use in LED lighting systems for notebook computers, tablets and other devices. It can also be used in any system that requires temperature control. The S-5855A is connected to the DIM pin of an LED driver IC to control LED brightness, enhance security and increase efficiency.

The S-5855A maintains 100% brightness to the specified temperature. Once the specified temperature is exceeded, the S-5855A gradually decreases the PWM output load ratio as the temperature increases. This allows the LED brightness to gradually decrease. In addition, because the S-5855A can be directly connected to the DIM pin of an LED driver IC, it simplifies and provides high design security and efficiency.

The S-5855A is available in ultra-small SNT-4A packaging (1.2 x 1.6 x 0.5 mm) for high-density mounting and standard SOT-23-5 packaging (2.9 x 2.8 x 1.3 mm). The S-5855A features a low operating voltage of 1.65V to 5.5V, making it suitable for battery-operated portable devices.
