Osram Malaysia LED chip new plant completed, production of 6-inch epitaxial wafer

On November 24th, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors held a ceremony to celebrate the roof of the LED chip manufacturing plant in Malaysia's Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

Earlier, Osram announced that it would invest in the construction of the LED epitaxial plant in Malaysia, and immediately was opposed by the fifth largest shareholder slamming the opportunity and diluting the profit.

After the news of the factory was announced, the stock price also fell 25% and hit the company's biggest single-day decline. The LED projection plant, which is planned to invest $1.1 billion, will allow the original investor to expect the company to switch to the profitable car or street lighting market after the sale of lighting.

Mr. Aldo Kamper, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Germany, Dr. Roland Mueller, General Manager of Malaysia Branch, and Mr. YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, attended the company's internal ceremony.

The 48-acre Kulim plant will become the world's largest and most advanced LED chip production base. The products developed and produced at the new plant in Kulim include semiconductor LED chips based on 6-inch wafers.

Mr. Aldo Kamper, President and CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Germany, said: "We are witnessing the rapid growth of the global LED lighting market brought about by the popularity of LED lighting systems. LED chips are the core components of these modern lighting systems."

“The new plant in Kulim not only supports the development of the LED ecosystem in Malaysia, but also strengthens OSRAM's leading position in the global LED market,” Aldo Kamper said.

With the completion of the piling and infrastructure projects, the new plant is scheduled to be equipped in the early summer of 2017 and will be ready for production by the end of 2017. Upon completion of all projects, the new facility will create more than 1,500 high-tech jobs in Malaysia.

Dr. Roland Mueller, General Manager of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (Malaysia) Pte Ltd, said: "Since the early 1970s, our LEDs were assembled at the first Osram plant in Penang. Since then, the factory has been assembled. With the ability to produce modern LED chips, today, as the factory map expands to Kulim, the new production capacity will help OSRAM further consolidate its technological leadership and global flexibility in the growing demand for top quality LEDs. Responsiveness."
