Can you fold the OLED screen phone? Apple's "Flexible Display Device" patent approved

On Tuesday, Apple's latest patent application was passed on a device with a metal body and a foldable OLED display with a hinged design in between.

The patent, called "Flexible Display Device", patent No. 9504170, describes an iPhone with a foldable full-screen overlay design. This flip-type flip phone was first adopted by Motorola in the 1990s, and Apple's patents can be folded directly if it is inconvenient to carry.

In addition to folding, Apple's patented component design is also quite flexible, the most important is the folding OLED display and metal support structure. Apple uses Nitinol in its patents, taking advantage of the elastic structure and memory properties of Nitinol and replacing existing flexible polymers.

In some examples of the patent, the foldable smartphone includes a foldable base and is divided into upper and lower portions. Each section contains the processor, sensors, and circuit components common to some smartphones. For example, the upper layer will include a camera, display controller, speaker module and ambient light sensor, while in the lower part, the microphone, CPU, GPU, vibrator and other necessary components will be used.

The upper and lower parts are connected by a single or multiple hinge mechanism and can be moved and folded with each other, while the upper and lower parts are exchanged for data via a flexible printed circuit board. The display is covered between the two parts. Interestingly, Apple pointed out in the patent that this flexible screen can contain additional materials to accommodate two or even more than two folding configurations.

In one example, Apple folded the iPhone into a state similar to an ancient flip phone and provided additional protection. The folded back section takes the screen outward for easy operation. There is another form, even a triple fold, in which two folded sections can even be clipped to the user's clothes.

In the triple folded portion, the display content of the covered screen can be switched by the OLED component of the pressure sensitive technology. In the patent, Apple uses fixed connectors, but in the future, considering the use of glass and other metal materials, other forms can be used instead.

Considering the development trend of the iPhone in the last ten years, Apple's technology of using this folding screen is unlikely to be transformed into reality in a few years, so we want to expect an iPhone or iPad that can be folded on the screen, and it will take time to wait.

There are rumors that Apple will use a curved OLED display on the iPhone in 2017, but despite this, next year's iPhone will not change much in overall style.

Apple's patent for a collapsible smartphone was filed in July 2014, and the patent inventors were Fletcher R. Rothkopf, Andrew JMJanis and Teodor Dabov.
