Dan Seger, senior chief engineer of Rockwell Automation's global OEM group, recently shared his insights on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) during an interview. He emphasized that before deploying hardware and implementing solutions, significant preparatory work in information and communication is essential. This ensures that smart factories can seamlessly connect to the cloud and gain the trust of their customers.
According to Seger, information technology has significantly strengthened the relationship between original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users. Technologies like data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the manufacturing landscape, not only improving product quality and reducing downtime but also addressing critical areas such as cybersecurity and remote access. He noted that big data and analytics are increasingly influencing end users, offering new opportunities for optimization and performance enhancement.
End users are now seeking more efficient systems that can collect and analyze large volumes of data for continuous improvement. They also expect OEMs to take full responsibility for plant equipment. Today’s trend shows that if a problem arises with the equipment, OEMs must respond within hours. This shift in expectations is reshaping the requirements for monitoring tools, pushing OEMs to collect real-time device data around the clock to detect and prevent issues before they occur.
Seger highlighted that network infrastructure, security protocols, remote access capabilities, and cloud storage have become key growth areas in the industry. These elements are no longer optional—they are fundamental to modern industrial operations. As companies move toward more connected and intelligent environments, the ability to securely manage and analyze data becomes crucial for maintaining competitive advantage.
In addition, Seger mentioned that Rockwell Automation is developing its first generation of remote access solutions specifically tailored for the OEM market. These solutions aim to provide secure, reliable connectivity between machines and the cloud, enabling OEMs to monitor and manage equipment from anywhere. This advancement supports the growing demand for real-time visibility and control, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
