What is AMD's acquisition of Nitero? Universal VR with wireless transmission

AMD recently acquired wireless chip maker Nitero

Beijing morning news on April 13, AMD believes that through the acquisition of a Texas chip maker, the company can promote the popularity of portable virtual reality eye mask.

AMD announced the acquisition of Nitero on Monday, but the purchase price has not been disclosed. Nitero has developed a 60GHz wireless chip that claims to deliver HD video without delay.

Roy Taylor, vice president of the AMD Alliance, said at an industry conference in Bristol, England, on Wednesday that eye masks that require heavy cables to connect to PCs or game consoles have constrained growth in the virtual reality industry.

Taylor said in an interview that the acquisition of Nitero enabled AMD to provide end-to-end virtual reality and augmented reality solutions to embrace a full range of technologies, including processing video, controlling memory, and transmitting wireless video chips.

Nitero CEO Pat Kelly stated that his company was first spun off from an Australian government-sponsored research center and they aimed at the next generation of virtual reality goggles. However, he refused to disclose when these products will be listed.

Still early

Due to lower-than-expected sales of high-end products such as Facebook Oculus and HTC Vive, many people believe that virtual reality has been over-hyped and unable to become mainstream technology. However, he said that such criticism is like the "Time" magazine in 1994 saying that the Internet will never be a climate.

He pointed out that in many areas such as construction and medical care, the popularity of virtual reality and augmented reality has surpassed analyst expectations.

AMD expects that the growth of virtual reality and augmented reality will boost the company's high-end GPU and CPU needs. To promote these technologies, AMD has sponsored virtual reality movies, games, and independent use experiences.

"As long as it is good for virtual reality, it will be good for AMD," said Taylor.

He cited a measure that says, by 2020, the total sales of indoor virtual reality goggles will reach 23 million units, and consumers will also purchase 122 million mobile-based virtual reality goggles, such as Google Daydream.

Overcoming obstacles

Taylor said that for movie producers and game developers, it is not easy to create high frame rate video content without vertigo. But he said that chip companies will soon overcome these technical hurdles, and Nitro's ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi is one of them.

"The competition between AMD and Infineon and Infineon is fierce. We all hope to develop better GPUs and CPUs." He said, "Don't always think about the current rendering effect, but consider the effect of the next one to three years."

AMD believes that the virtual reality experience at a fixed location can be an important business model, and it can also help to spread the technology, for example allowing users to pay for viewing virtual reality content in the mall. AMD has collaborated with many similar sites in the United States, Europe and Asia.
