Foreign media: Panasonic or Tesla built a super battery in China

According to overseas media reports, Matsushita Corporation, one of Tesla's earliest major suppliers for its super battery technology, has recently indicated it is considering a potential partnership with the electric car giant again. The company is reportedly planning to build a super battery production facility in China, signaling a possible return to collaboration with Tesla. This development suggests that Tesla’s influence and growth in the Chinese market are expected to continue in the coming years. Currently, Panasonic continues to supply Tesla with high-performance batteries for its vehicles in Japan and the U.S. In January 2016, the two companies jointly invested $5 billion to establish the Gigafactory in Nevada, which remains the world's largest automotive battery plant. Since its launch, the facility has played a crucial role in supporting Tesla’s expansion. Meanwhile, Panasonic hasn’t been idle either. It also built another facility in Fabrelo, New York, in the summer of 2017, where it produces solar batteries for SolarCity, a subsidiary of Tesla. In 2017, Tesla confirmed plans to partner with the Shanghai municipal government to build a battery factory in China. However, this project, which was expected to be announced at the end of 2017, has yet to materialize. At the beginning of 2018, during the CES show, Kazuhiro Tsuga, President of Panasonic, mentioned that the company is currently evaluating the possibility of producing batteries for Tesla’s future Chinese factories. He noted that the output could reach levels similar to those at the Nevada plant. According to a report by Nikkei Shimbun, Tsuga also revealed that Tesla reduced its weekly production target for the first quarter of 2018 from 2,500 to 2,000 vehicles. This slowdown affected not only the Model 3 but also led Panasonic to delay the delivery of car batteries. From Tsuga’s presentation, it became clear that Panasonic is aligning itself with Tesla’s strategy of localizing production for electric vehicles in Shanghai. Although no official plan for a Chinese battery factory has been finalized, it is likely that the new facility will be located in the Yangtze River Delta region. As we know, whether in the new energy or traditional vehicle markets, China has become a top priority for global automakers. In 2016 alone, Tesla’s sales in China reached $1 billion (approximately RMB6.5 billion). While 2017 figures haven't been officially released, they are expected to be slightly higher. This highlights the importance of establishing a factory in China, and both Musk and Panasonic seem to be preparing for it. Earlier, Elon Musk had stated that Tesla’s Chinese factory would be established within three years, and now it seems that Panasonic is already getting ready with the necessary battery infrastructure.
