The Spring Festival, often referred to as the largest human migration on Earth, presents a significant challenge for transportation hubs across China. As millions of people head home, security becomes a top priority. To enhance safety, Chinese police have introduced smart sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology at Zhengzhou Station, one of the busiest railway stations in the country.
These glasses are designed to help officers quickly identify individuals in real time, making it easier to spot potential threats or suspects. During the recent Spring Festival rush, the technology was deployed at the station's four main entrances. According to reports, the system has already helped catch seven suspects, including those involved in human trafficking and traffic violations. Additionally, 26 people were detained for using fake identity documents.
The technology is not new—similar systems were used during the Tsingtao Beer Festival last August, where over 2.3 million face images were captured, leading to the arrest of 25 fugitives and 19 drug addicts. The sunglasses operate by connecting to a mobile device and comparing faces against a database, allowing identification in just a tenth of a second. This rapid response helps law enforcement act faster than traditional camera systems, which can suffer from delays.
Developed by Beijing-based company LLVision, the glasses use an AI-powered neural network and Intel’s vision processor. Each pair costs around 3,999 RMB. While the technology shows great promise, there are still challenges, such as environmental interference affecting accuracy. The company is working to improve performance in complex settings.
While many in China are accustomed to surveillance and biometric data collection, concerns about privacy remain. Human rights groups have raised alarms about the potential misuse of personal data. However, some argue that in public spaces, facial recognition is already part of daily life, and the benefits—such as improved security and reduced fraud—outweigh the risks.
As the Spring Festival continues, these smart sunglasses are proving to be a valuable tool in ensuring safer travel for millions. After all, no one wants to miss their journey home due to security issues.
