The Spring Festival, often referred to as the world’s largest human migration, presents a significant challenge for transportation hubs across China. To enhance security during this critical period, the Chinese police have introduced a new tool: face recognition-enabled sunglasses, currently being tested at Zhengzhou East Railway Station.
These smart glasses allow officers to identify individuals in just a fraction of a second, significantly improving real-time monitoring and response times. According to reports, the technology has already helped catch seven suspects, including those involved in human trafficking and traffic violations. In addition, 26 people were detained for using fake identity documents. The system is designed to connect with police databases, providing instant access to personal information such as names, addresses, and criminal records.
This technology was also used during the Tsingtao Beer Festival last August, where over 2.3 million facial images were captured, leading to the arrest of 25 fugitives, 19 drug addicts, and 37 others for various offenses. The efficiency of the system has been praised, especially in high-traffic environments where traditional surveillance may fall short.
The sunglasses, developed by Beijing-based company LLVision, use an AI-powered neural network and Intel’s vision processor. They are connected to a smartphone and cost around 3,999 RMB per pair. Unlike conventional cameras that rely on cloud-based databases, these glasses can compare faces directly on a mobile device, reducing response time to less than a tenth of a second.
While the technology offers clear benefits in terms of speed and accuracy, it has also sparked concerns about privacy. Human rights groups worry about the potential misuse of personal data, especially in public spaces. However, many Chinese citizens are already accustomed to the widespread use of biometric data, making such technologies more accepted in everyday life.
As the Spring Festival approaches, the deployment of these glasses is expected to play a key role in ensuring public safety. With millions of travelers passing through major transportation hubs, the need for efficient and accurate identification methods has never been greater. While some remain cautious about the implications of constant surveillance, others see it as a necessary step toward a safer and more secure society.
