ROHM, a leading name in the semiconductor industry, has introduced an advanced DC/DC converter with the highest step-down ratio for 2MHz operation, specifically designed for 48V power systems used in mild hybrid vehicles. This innovative product, the "BD9V100MUF-C," utilizes ROHM's proprietary NanoPulseControl technology to achieve remarkable performance.

The "BD9V100MUF-C" integrates ultra-high-speed pulse control technology, combining ROHM’s expertise in circuit design, layout, and process optimization. It can handle up to 60V input voltage and convert it down to as low as 2.5V, offering an industry-leading step-down ratio of 24:1. This allows for significant miniaturization of peripheral components and simplifies complex power conversion structures that previously required multiple ICs.

This product was launched in July 2017, with a sample price of 1,000 yen per unit (excluding tax). Mass production started in December 2017, with a monthly capacity of 100,000 units. The initial manufacturing was handled by ROHM Hamamatsu Co., Ltd. in Japan, while later production was moved to ROHM Electronics Philippines, Inc.

ROHM plans to expand the use of NanoPulseControl technology into industrial equipment this year, aiming to support further miniaturization and system simplification across various applications.

In recent years, the adoption of 48V power systems in the automotive sector has gained momentum due to their superior energy efficiency and environmental benefits compared to traditional 12V systems. Mild hybrid vehicles are now attracting more attention, but they require efficient power management solutions.

Previously, there was no direct 48V to 3.3V or 5V power IC available at 2MHz, forcing engineers to use a two-step conversion process involving an intermediate 12V stage. To address this gap, ROHM developed the NanoPulseControl technology, leveraging its analog design and vertical integration capabilities to create a single-chip power solution.

The new "BD9V100MUF-C" features the NanoPulseControl technology, which enables a switch-on time of just 9ns—allowing for the highest step-down ratio in the industry. This makes it ideal for driving ECUs in 48V systems without interfering with AM radio frequencies, which are limited to a maximum of 1.84MHz.

This high-frequency operation not only supports stable performance but also reduces the size of external components such as coils, enabling compact and efficient power solutions. With just one power IC, the entire voltage conversion process from 48V to 3.3V or 5V can be achieved, cutting component count by half and significantly reducing system complexity.

NanoPulseControl is a key innovation from ROHM, made possible through its vertical integration model and advanced analog technologies. It offers tremendous value for applications like mild hybrid vehicles, industrial robots, and base station auxiliary power supplies, where space and efficiency are critical.

*1) DC/DC converter

A DC/DC converter is a type of power IC that converts one DC voltage level to another. It can either step down (buck) or step up (boost) the voltage, depending on the application requirements.
