Fieldbus communication technology between PLC and ABB inverter

Profibus is one of the most widely used and successful fieldbuses in industrial control systems, known for its open architecture that is not dependent on any specific manufacturer. This allows a wide range of automation devices to communicate seamlessly through a common interface protocol. Among its variants, Profibus-DP (Distributed I/O) is particularly well-suited for high-speed, time-critical applications. It enables efficient communication between the system and external devices, making it ideal for remote I/O systems. The bus supports bidirectional digital communication among various field devices such as PLCs, smart transmitters, and inverters, which simplifies integration with control systems from different manufacturers. Jigang Gangde Color Plate Co., Ltd., established in 2003 by Jinan Iron and Steel Group Corporation, is a large-scale color plate production base with an annual output of 200,000 tons. In their production line, the gas system in the curing furnace, heat-conducting oil furnace, and hydrogen production process requires precise gas pressurization. To meet these requirements, the gas pressurizing machine is equipped with a control system based on Profibus-DP technology. This system integrates Siemens S7-300 PLCs and ABB ACS600 inverters, ensuring seamless communication and control across different manufacturers' equipment. The system configuration includes the use of Siemens S7-315-2DP as the master station and ABB ACS600 inverters as slave stations. Communication is facilitated via the NPBA-12 module, which connects the inverters to the Profibus-DP network. Programming is done using STEP7 V5.2, while the human-machine interface is managed through WinCC 5.1. Ethernet is used for communication between the PLC and the upper-level system. In terms of communication protocol, the Profibus-DP network uses a structured data telegram that consists of a protocol header, network data, and a protocol layer. The network data includes PPO (Process Data Object), which contains both PKW (Parameter Key Words) and PZD (Process Data Words). PKW holds function codes, while PZD carries input/output values such as frequency references and feedback signals. The PPO types vary depending on the application, allowing independent transmission of control and process data. The STEP7 project involves configuring the hardware, importing GSD files, and setting up the PPO type (in this case, PPO4). System functions SFC14 and SFC15 are used to read and write data between the PLC and the inverter. Additionally, a data block is created for communication, and a variable table is set up to monitor real-time data exchange. On the inverter side, basic settings include defining the module type, selecting the communication protocol, choosing the PPO type, and assigning device addresses. These settings ensure proper communication between the inverter and the PLC. Process parameters are also configured to define how data is exchanged between the master and the slave devices. Finally, after the system is fully integrated, the inverter control system demonstrates strong reliability, ease of operation, and flexibility for future modifications. The implementation at Jigang Gangde has proven effective, offering a successful model for future automation projects involving multi-vendor network communications.
