STMicroelectronics Power Line Communication Chipset Solution Helps New Smart Power Infrastructure

**[13/5] NEW new** **STMicroelectronics Power Line Communication Chipset Solution: Paving the Way for Smarter Energy Infrastructure** The introduction of STMicroelectronics’ new power line communication (PLC) modem chipset marks a significant step forward in the development of smart energy systems. This innovative solution is designed to simplify the design and deployment of smart meters, grid nodes, street lights, home controllers, and industrial controllers, enabling faster and more efficient implementation of next-generation smart infrastructure. Launched on October 9, 2017, in China, this modular approach gives manufacturers the flexibility to integrate the chipset into both new designs and existing devices. It supports multiple PLC standards and offers a cost-effective, programmable platform that can be adapted across various applications. The chipset is already being used by three leading smart meter manufacturers to develop advanced solutions, showcasing its versatility and performance. At the heart of the solution are two key components: the ST8500 programmable PLC engine and the STLD1 line driver. The ST8500 is a high-performance system-on-chip (SoC) featuring a quad-core DSP and an ARM Cortex-M4F core, allowing for real-time protocol processing and efficient system management. It also includes AES encryption and an analog front end (AFE) for seamless integration with the STLD1 line driver. The STLD1 line driver ensures reliable communication even over noisy power lines, offering high drive capability and low impedance. Together, these chips support certified G3-PLC and PRIME protocols while complying with global regulatory standards such as CENELEC, FCC, and ARIB. With ultra-low power consumption and flexible programmability, the chipset helps meet strict energy efficiency requirements while supporting software updates and multi-model compatibility. This makes it ideal for global deployment and long-term scalability. According to IHS Markit, the global smart meter market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of over 8% through 2021, with annual sales surpassing 100 million units. As demand for smart infrastructure continues to rise, STMicroelectronics’ new PLC chipset is well-positioned to lead the way in connecting the future of energy management. Available now in volume production, the ST8500 comes in a compact 7mm x 7mm QFN56 package, while the STLD1 is available in a 4mm x 4mm QFN24 package.
